EDUCATION
The Ottawa Neuromuscular Centre offers a 1-year clinical fellowship. Given the catchment area of approximately 2 million people, the fellow will evaluate both inpatients and outpatients with a wide spectrum of neuromuscular conditions.
With 6 full-time and 3 part-time neuromuscular specialists, fellows are exposed to different approaches, styles, and expertise when performing clinical consultations and EMG examinations including single fiber EMG. The fellow will participate in neuromuscular subspecialty clinics including the genetic neuromuscular conditions clinic, the myotonic dystrophy clinic, the myasthenia gravis clinic, the multidisciplinary ALS clinic, and the traumatic peripheral nerve clinic.
The fellowship also offers specialized training in the interpretation of MRI in myopathies, ultrasound for neuromuscular conditions, and muscle biopsies. Research opportunities include clinical research trials, quality improvement projects, translational research, and natural history studies. Finally, the fellows are actively involved in the education of neurology residents both in-clinic and through didactic teaching sessions.
